We decided to do some tests on an official Toronto Police Periscope account in the Toronto Police Service Corporate Communications office on Tuesday July 7, 2015 during an orientation to social media training session with our Youth In Policing Initiative student. Our first test was with social media specialist Rob Cairns as he visited our office briefly. He was talking to us about Instagram photos now being high definition, so we tried a periscope video.. and it worked! Teen Amanda Todd committed suicide after posting a youtube video online outlining her harassment. It was interesting to note in the presentation that Carol herself feared that Amanda Blain would be subject to online harassment for participating in the presentation done live using Google Plus Hangouts On Air technology at the Dole Auditorium on campus. Constable Mills stressed that the good must prevail, and we must use social media tools for success and safety. Crime Stoppers USA Past Chair Scott Abrams joined Constable Scott Mills of Toronto Police Service & Crime Stoppers live on a Hangout On Air May 27 at a Parent Engagement Evening at Akwesasne near Cornwall. RCMP Officer Cynthia Lord has been policing the Akwesasne area for twenty years, and is one of those police officers who genuinely cares and knows her community well. Cynthia, in collaboration with Lisa Francis-Benedict of the Akwesasne Mohawk Board of Education (AMBE) arranged a two day "Social Media For Success & Safety" awareness and education campaign in the area May 27 & 28, 2013. I was honoured to travel by Via Rail train to Cornwall and Akwesasne area from Toronto to speak with community members-specifically students and parents about using social media for success and safety in my capacity as a Toronto Police Service Social Media Officer and Adviser to Crime Stoppers programs on social media.
